Email: sonnet@pcosupport.org > Dear Sonnet, I respect your thoughts on depression and how it indeed effects us women with PCOS. May I,just point one thing out. If there is a Serotonin imbalance, that should indeed be treated by these horrible drugs....then,why not get your serotoninlevels tested? That should be all it takes to see if it is acutally the PCOS,or the Serotonin inbalance. I have been put thru the mill on these drugs...one simple,,yes, one simple blood test,,,would have completely ruled out that I had a serotonin inbalance. I DON'T!. In respect for all the women...me included..who still does suffer from depression...it is also the insulin resistance....the weight problems....dear lord,,anyone would be depressed carrying around a hundred or more extra pounds..feeling worthless about themselves and less of a woman,as we have difficulty conceiving..I am including myself as I write. Depression is SECONDARY to this chronic disease,so if we are going to treat the disease....treat the disease it'self,,,not bandaid the problem. Once the disease or syndrome is corrected, the depression, anxiety, panic attacks should subside...it may take a while,,,but don't medicate the problem...it is like hiding behind a door. Try getting off the anti-depressants......try....it is a darned nightmare. Clincally,we have an adjustment disorder with related anxiety and depression from this syndrom...that is to be expected. There is no way that serotonin is responsible for the depression. As you already know....I got diabetes insipidus from the med called "luvox"......there is a list as long as a highway with side effects from that drug.....lupus,arthririts......I can go on and on. Some of you will may never get any side effects at all.......but there are still going to be detramenal ,long lasting problems with other areas here. I,currently participate in a study with what anti-depressants can do to the human body.Once you are on them...might as well be doomed to be on them for the rest of your life and that is a shame. I am in no way trying to be negative to what you wrote,,,I am just offering advice for women that are suffering and may suffer more later on. There are far more better ways at combating depression....one is just having this support group to be able to be open and blunt about our concerns and depression and helplessness at times. My heart goes out to every single one of you,and it is just that I would hate to have ANYONE out there suffer the effects as I did...being told that the side effects would subside...then trial and error...trying others....mixing with others.....and then PCOS turns into a myriad of chronic disorders. We are women and we are STRONG.....I KNOW THAT AT TIMES,I SUFFERED SUICIDAL THOUGHTS,,,AND I STILL DO...AT TIMES,I JUST CANNOT TAKE THE DISCOMFORT.....but,I try and discipline my body. I have gone to the point of trying to exphixiate myself in my car...taken an overdose of pills........this was after I was taken off these pills. Wean off them..that's what the doctor will do....it is like an alchoholic going thru detox and that is certainly no picnic. Hey,if the drugs work and you feel your body telling you that it is the right thing to do..then by all means,go with your instinct. I am just trying to help. Again,I just want to point out that it take alot of courage to go thru what we are....and the best part,is that once the underlying disorder is under control...the depression should subside....one,two three....takes time...but we have to think positve. Once you start playing around with the central nervous system......is like playing with fire. Again,we have enought going on with our hormones. THIS IS CLEARLY AN ENDOCRINE DISORDER,,,NOT A MAJOR MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEM!
