Technically, you're correct--insulin is a hormone. But it's not the kind of hormone that most ob/gyns have an extensive knowledge of. Probably one of the best things you can do is to find a competent Reproductive Endocrinologist in your area who specializes or at least has an interest in PCOS. REs will be more willing to prescribe insulin sensitizing drugs, and since this is an insulin-based disorder, that's the angle from which to attack this.

There is a ton of information in the archives of this site about insulin, how it works, what it does to your body, etc., as well as information on the different insulin sensitizers and their side effects. It's a time consuming task to look and read through it all, but there is nothing more important to your health than to be a well-informed patient and your own advocate.
