You are right - the only difference is that XR is time released. The maximum recommended dosage for either Glucophage is 2250mg per day - although some women take even more. From my information (from the glucophage medical info sheet) anything less than 1500 is considered not very helpful - but that is in reference to diabetes, so I don't know if a lesser dose can help much with PCOS. 500mg is below average for most women being treated. I would recommend you talk with your dr. and find some good information to take to him that shows most women benefit from a higher dose. There are many PCOS web sites and glucophage studies that may be able to help you. I am taking 2000mg and seem to be doing well. My acne is clearing and am losing weight at a reasonable pace. I also suffer no more sugar cravings. I know it sometimes hard to ask your dr. for medication, but it is your body and if this is not working for you, you have every right to ask. Best of luck.
