Re: Desperately need advice about meds!!!From: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 9 Nov 2001 02:17:34 -0600 (CST)
You could try one of the other insulin sensitizers, like Avandia or Actos. Or, go on the Metformin XR version which is supposedly much gentler on the stomach. Either way, it's really important for your health that you try to get your insulin levels to a proper level so you can protect your pancreas and cardiovascular system. As far as symptoms go, if you're not trying to get pregnant I know many women here have had great success with Aldactone for facial hair and acne, some even have said for weight loss. It helps block the testosterone. Also, although it is expensive (approx. $50/month here in the US) I have heard nothing but good about Vaniqua for facial hair. The birth control route I could take or leave. I never saw any benefit from it personally, it didn't even induce periods for me regularly. Since it doesn't do anything to make you healthier, if it isn't controlling your symptoms, why bother. I have also heard on these forums (and in a medical journal article from medscape that I can't place at the moment) that there is evidence that birth control pills make your glucose metabolism, and thus your PCOS symptoms, WORSE. No thanks!
