Re: maybe Dr. Sam can help - On Glucophage and weight lossFrom: Renee (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 07 Nov 2001 08:25:30 -0800
Muriel, I just have a few brief comments. First, I'm glad you're not taking this lying down. I think we're all trying to beat it and not let it control us. That message to people comes up regularly. That's a healthy reaction.
> My focus is currently on the weight loss because at the moment it appears my You don't have to respond to this comment. It's just something for you to ponder for yourself. If your marriage is in jeopardy now, is this the best time to get pregnant? What if you put some weight back on after pregnancy. If your husband has problems with it now, will he be bothered less in a few years just because you have a child? It's much harder to deal with problems, including potential divorce, when kids are involved (spoken as a child of divorce).
> You are correct in that losing weight does decrease the risks of diabetes and heart disease. Also, fat cells do store estrogen (and I think makes it as well, if I recall correctly). However, for many PCOSers, the weight gain is due to the hormonal imbalances (sex hormones, insulin, et al) from the PCOS. The weight does not cause the PCOS. There are many heavy women without PCOS. In fact, many women suddenly started gaining weight despite no change in behavior, and that was one of the factors in the diagnosis.
> I think that what is happening is that people have differing understandings of PCOS. I commend you for doing your own research and analysis. I have said in the past that we shouldn't just accept things without assessing them. However, there are many people here who have been researching and analyzing this condition for years, and are quite knowledgable. I have not been offended by your posts personally, but I have disagreed with some of what you said. I also did interpret one of your statements blaming women for their weight gain (I don't have time to search my old mail to find the statement). You have come on strong, and don't seem open to other perspectives. I think that is what some people are reacting to. We are all looking for answers. Some of those answers have been found, others haven't. Good luck in your quest for answers and personal success. Renee
