Re: maybe Dr. Sam can help - On Glucophage and weight lossFrom: Muriel (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 7 Nov 2001 08:50:13 -0800
Hello Kimberly and anyone else who wants to chew my ass for asking questions. I will respond to Kimberlys post, given she sumed up everyones complaints with me very well.
> Muriel, I totally understand that you are seeking answers. THANK YOU! All I am doing is trying to make sense of it all. I am a student of philosophy, so I apologise to anyone who does not appreciate my approach to this disease that I was unfortunate enough to become afflicted with. Call me cerebral, call me illogical, but understand that I'm in the SAME BOAT and I need help with this too.
It is a
> scary thing to be told you have a condition that can possibly affect My focus is currently on the weight loss because at the moment it appears my marriage depends on it. My husband and I are having a VERY hard time with my weight, and he has said numerous times that he doesn't want to make love to me because I am unattractive to him. This, of course, makes TTC harder than it should be, given there are no sperm to impregnante me even if I could ovulate. He blames me for being overweight. I blame me for being overweight sometimes too, despite all the weight I've lost, and despite the diet changes and whatnot. I still weigh 230, twenty pounds less than when we were married, thanks to the Glucophage and a high fiber diet.
It is normal and
> good to try to think things out and bring some kind of understanding to If it's normal and good, why are so many women here ready to attack me for trying to make sense of it all?
It is always
> important to remember however that there are lots of things the medical I won't accept that. If I am stuck with PCOS for life, then I demand from my Dr. to either learn what's wrong or to refer me to someone who does know. I believe all the answers are out there, and I believe that we ALL can become normal once again with the right combination.
There are some things that ARE known about PCOS however,
> and there have been many people on this board trying to help you with All questions can be answered, if not now, then sometime in the future. I will not accept that something as basic as a hormonal imbalance is too confusing to be treated. I demand answers. I will not lay down and allow this freaking disease to do what it will to me. I'm sorry if this offends people, but that is how I plan to deal with PCOS. I am specifically at this board NOT for support, but for medical information. If I wanted support, I would be somewhere else that isn't called PCOS-medication. In fact, right now I am a part of the PCOSupport Wisconsin and helping to start up a support system in the state along with Kim Frankenhoff, who runs PCOSupport Wisconsin (almost a chapter of the PCOSA). This is how serious I am about not only learning about the disease, but to then pass on this information to others in a support group setting.
It does
> not appear to me (or seemingly to anyone else) that you are really I do not know where you got this idea. Clearly I have been asking questions and have been trying to piece together what is fact, what is anecdotal, and what just doesn't hold up. Through numerous personal stories, I can assume that yes, in fact, glucophage does not help everyone. The answer I am looking for is why, and I have no heard the answer yet. This is why I will continue to ask. Please do not make assumptions of me without evidence.
You don't get answers by coming up with your own logical
> reasoning, you get them from listening to many different people and This is false. Everyone here has used logical reasoning through the information provided here and through other websites and books and doctors in order to find the balance of drugs and personal behaviors which will give them relief from PCOS. This is how you get answers. At least I'm honest about it.
> By reading your past several posts I have noticed one thing - it seems Only because it is! From everything I have read and from everything that I have learned, if you are a woman with PCOS and are overweight, the most important thing you can do for yourself is to lose the weight. Losing the weight will help lessen the estrogen levels in your body because of the reduction of fat cells, which in turn helps to normalise your hormonal balance. Losing the weight also will help you reduce the risks of heart disease and diabetes, and this is a FACT which can be backed up by thousands of sources. Why critisize me for putting the focus on where I believe it is most important? I post on what I am curious about, and you post on what you are curious about! This is an elementary mailing list format which is clearly simple to utilise.
(yet conversely, you seem to be
> saying obesity is ultimatly not due to PCOS, but a lack of self control) When have I said this? Never. Ubsubstantiated accusation. I said that logically, if glucophage were to better use the insulin in your body, then it only makes sense that you would lose weight. I theorised that perhaps there was something else wrong if this were not the case, be it a diet problem, an excersise problem, or a non-related hormonal problem. I asked if this could be a possibility, and people lunged at my throat like I was some kind of monster! Did I deserve that for trying to find answers? Give me a break!
> I still don't think with all the people who have tried to help you that On the other hand, I'm guessing that the majority of the women here are taking Glucophage to lose weight, from what I have read thus far. I believe you are way off in this respect.
They may take Meridia and herbal supplements but
> Glucophage is so NOT prescribed for weight loss. Ironically, my doctor prescribed Glucophage to me for weight loss, this is why I wanted Dr. Sams opinion.
This is a concern
> because if you strongly tie the two together, when you stop losing Another unsupported assertion. When have I ever said that I would discontinue taking glucophage?
And that
> would be so unfortunate and proof positive that you do not at all Once again, I did no such thing. If you read into my posts more than what I have actually said, then you really have no right to accuse me of this. *snip snip snip* Everyone is so quick to point fingers at me for asking questions. This makes me wonder if you are actually interested in the least in finding answers, perhaps you are here to simply flame me and anyone else who is trying to deal with PCOS in their own way. If this is the case, shame on you. Muriel
