Re: Another glucophage question -- any ideas?

In addition to the Met side effects, it is not at all uncommon to lose a large amount of weight during the first two weeks of low carbing due to water loss. This happens because carbohydrates require quite a bit of fluid to be processed properly, and when you get them out of your system your body also rids itself of excess water. This with the stomach problems could easily cause initial rapid weight loss - but it is my understanding that Met in and of itself takes several weeks to a month or two to actually start working in it's intended form. I wouldn't worry about the loss so far, but I also wouldn't get my hopes up that it will continue as quickly as it has. I think you will find that you will keep it off as long as you continue low-carbing, but once you re-introduce carbs you will probably gain 5-7 lbs. back. You should, however, slowly and consistantly lose weight if you remain on the met and continue low-carbing. This is more frustrating, but much more preferable - as your body will need time to adjust. Then again, some women have trouble losing weight no matter what they are doing. We all have to be patient, kind and fair to our bodies.

I don't think anyone knows why some people lose weight with glucophage and others don't. I have been on glucophage for 5 months, and with dieting in the last 4 I have lost 31 lbs. (average 1.5 per week). I am not very restrictive and am rarely hungry - but I can't say if the weightloss is due to the met or the dieting. I do believe however that it is a bit of both. I still have occasional stomach problems, so maybe the loss is due to that too. For me, I don't care what the reason is as long as the weight keeps coming off! :) It sounds like you are very motivated and willing to work hard for what you want. That is so great, and I'm sure you will be successful. I think it's probably a good idea to not expect to continue losing 6.5lbs per week! :) Ah, if we could all be so lucky ;)
