Re: ProgesteroneFrom: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 4 Nov 2001 23:02:33 -0600 (CST)
Two thoughts: One, you will only get a period when you STOP taking the progesterone after taking it for a while. Progesterone is what allows your body to build up a lining in the uterus. You take it, and it builds up, and then you stop. And that withdrawl is what causes the bleed. I think most women start a period a few days after their last dose of progesterone. (This is why many women who have PCOS take progesterone supplements to help them hold a pregnancy instead of miscarry, as well as why it can be dangerous to take Provera or equivalent when pregnant - the withdrawl when you stop may induce a miscarriage.) Second, what kind of progesterone are you taking? 5mg seems awfully low to me. I know when I take Prometrium, the daily dose is 200mg. When I was on natural progesterone cream (a la GNC) the capsules were 20mg and it said to take 1-3 daily. But the doses may be different for different types of progesterone. It might just be that 5mg isn't enough to allow your body to build up a lining.
