I think that what it is is that Glucophage is the brand name. Metformin is the generic name. However, the patent is still active, so noone can make a generic one yet. But, it will be under the name metformin when they make it.

Every drug, even the brand new ones, have a generic drug name, in addition to the brand name everyone knows from the marketing. But, it's always in the marketing literature.
