Re: glucophage and pregnancy lossFrom: =?iso-8859-2?q?Zalányi Sámuel ?= (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 4 Nov 2000 18:49:02 -0800
Hi Naz, While some 15% of clinical pregnancies ends up in spontaneous abortion, the rate is 2-3X higher for PCOSers. This is due to the elevated LH levels which disturb early pgy and to the disturbed glucose metabolism. As metformin reduces LH and corrects glucose metabolism its is advisable to continue it duriong the early months or longer. There is a catch however, metformin increases the risk of neural tube defects, that is why most obstetricians are afraid of continuing it during pgy. But this increased risk can be countered with extra folic acid while taking metformin. For your info Sam
