Glucophage -- is there really a generic

I'm totally confused. Lots of people on here have written about taking Metformin, the generic version of glucophage. Yet my pharamacist claims there is no generic on the market yet. Can anyone please tell me if the generic does exist for sale? I've seen it on websites, but I can't tell if it's predicted that it will be generic or what. What's the deal?
