Re: hair follicle problemFrom: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 1 Nov 2001 14:04:27 -0600 (CST)
Ann, i'm not sure if it's folliculitis specifically. but here's what i think: sounds like they are ingrown hairs, or very coarse hairs that aggrevate the skin. either way, both instances can cause blemishes/pimples anywhere there's hairgrowth. Curly/think hairs often have a hard time shooting out of the skin because they are not "straight"--often, they become trapped under the skin. still, they keep growing. sebum, secreted from the skin via the hair follicle, cannot get out and a pimple forms. many women have trouble with this on their chin/neck and sideburn areas. it is not dangerous--just unsightly. a topical cream such as topical erythromycin or differin will decrease the formation of pimples. used in conjunction with a cream or drug that slows/diminishes hair growth (such as Spiro or Vaniqua), this should help a great deal. i had this problem on my upper arms, and my dermatologist prescribed a special cream to use before and after i shaved. it worked! hope that helps, Sarah
