Mindy, I know how frustrating it is to feel like you are waiting and waiting for treatment and the dr.'s just don't seem to have the sense of urgency that it seems they should. I finally got my thyroid problem and my PCOS problem treated by my reproductive endocrinologist and am so relieved! From my experience I noticed a couple things from your post that the dr. might be wary about. First, my dr. told me that heart palpatations were made worse by thyroid medication and she was concerned about prescribing the synthroid meds. (she luckily forgot about this by the time she finally prescribed it! I suspected the heart palpitations were caused by a condition called mitral valve prolapse which is common in people with thyroid disease - she just told me to see my family dr. and didn't seem to relate the two.) Secondly, she highly suspects my thyroid condition was caused BY my pregnancy (as I'm sure it was) and after doing a lot of reading I found that most pregnancy induced thyroid problems disappear after 1 YEAR, and only in a few people do they continue. Therefore the fact that your baby is 9 months old may lead the dr. to believe that you will be 'cured' of your low thyroid numbers in a few months. From my undertstanding it seems there are many dr.s who do not take thyroid problems seriously, nor do they REALLY understand the numbers. In my instance my TSH numbers were completely in the normal range, the dr. said the only reason she knew about the problem was due to a very thorough neck examination where she felt several thyroid nodules. If you have the chance to find another dr, I would try it - it is frustrating enough to be ill and feeling poorly, but feeling completely out of control due to a dr. that is slow and very conservative in treatment is far worse!
