hi Ann,

Ann my name is Angie and I have had laser surgery on my neck for hair removal. I do not want to squash your hopes about the laser surgery but want to tell you my experience. I hope the dr or specialist that is doing the laser on you has been upfront and honest with you and you should also find out before hand if they are a doctor. in canada there are new laws for laser treatment due to inexperienced technicians that are not medical doctors. Laser hair removal treatment if not done properly can cause scarring dependant on how sensitive your skin is. I have a few scars from the laser and wish I had never done it. Hirsutism mostly is caused by hormone imbalance usually due to pcos but not every woman with excessive hair has pcos. I have known for a long time that I have had pcos after my laser treatments last year i finally decided to start drug therapy. The dermatologist here in edmonton that did my laser treatment was totally upfront with me and told me that no research as of yet has shown permanent (PERMANENT) results with any of the laser hair removal systems. Laser hair removal is very expensive and painful. I couldn't wax for 8 weeks before I could only shave and also like you could not shave for 3 days before the first treatment. The first patch test was $50.00. the first treatment was $250.00 the next six treatments were $200.00 each. I did not go for the rest because as my dermatologist and endocrinologist had told me it would be a waste of money but i hoped among all hopes laser would be it for me. I spent $1500.00 even though they told me it was not permanent especially due to my hormone problems from pcos. After the first treatment the hair was gone for about 3 weeks but then the feeling of growing hair came back you know what I mean its hard to explain but you know the sensations the sharp razor like poking on my neck and the rough skin and the prickles when you rub your hand on your neck. I knew the hair was growing back and I kept trying and trying the razor. I knew i had been warned hair growth is hormonal no matter how many times you laser the hormones keep sending hair. sure some of hair follicles are damaged from the laser but they grow back and i have more ingrowns caused from damaged follicles due to the laser.

I am sorry I ranted but I want you to know and be prepared. I have alot of low self esteem and depression due to my hirsuitism. I have been on spiro and diane 35 for 8 months and still do not notice a change for the better re the hair on my neck and what pisses me off is I know extended use of these medications will probably screw up my kidneys and liver and who knows what other organs this being the reason i wouldn't take meds before but i know i have to if i want the hair gone i don't care about period regularity or being a little overweight i just want the hair gone and it might take two years on meds or longer depending on how the meds are regulating my hormones and also depending on the lifespan of the hair follicle which can be years. The doctors will tell you too the only permanent hair removal technique is electrolysis which hurts too (I might add not as bad as laser) but it also takes a lot of time and money and each follicle must be done 3 or more times which takes forever. laser also as it happened with me change skin pigmentation so now i have discolored skin and hair. We are all looking for the quick fix and these laser companies are taking advantage of our psychological problems regarding our hair issues and society's view of how we should look and it is wrong. I now want to try the new veniqa cream which my medical will not cover since here in canada anything considered cosmetic is not covered and of course the company knows this and the price is sky high. Why am I doing all this why am I killing myself and tormenting myself over a hairy neck. can you beleive that. why can't we all in the world just say there are worse problems than a hairy neck but as i have said before i would rather take a knife and cut my neck all to hell and have a scarred neck instead of the hair and i think this way because society says women should not have hair in certain manly places. I am sorry but it is screwed. why should i think this way for society i am a good person. I have never hurt anyone and I wish the best for everyone. Most of all I wish the best for you. I hope the laser works for you. It does work for some although not totally but for some lessens the hair regrowth I hope this happens for you because I do not wish upon anyone the feelings of disappointment I went through with the laser. Make sure they have been honest with you and are not just out for your cash. I am sorry I ranted so long but I along with others know how we feel regarding this issue. I hope the best for everyone and mostly I hope someone finds a damn (excuse me) cure or better treatment for this so we can all get on with our lives in peace.
