Re: I am N O T Diabetic!!From: anonymous@obgyn.net ("anonymous@obgyn.net")Thu, 25 Oct 2001 10:21:29 -0400
Hi Missy! Yep. Been there...over and over. AFter a while, you get to be accustomed to telling the medical person the meds you take and saying..."No, I'm NOT diabetic, I take Glucophage for PCOS......No, I DON"T have high blood pressure, I take spironolactone for PCOS to flush out extra testosterone." Even for doctors, I've found myself coming up with a very simplified explanation of how each med works with my body and why PCOS affects my body the way it does. Yes. It DOES get FRUSTRATING!!! I have to fight with insurance coverages all the time (as do many of us) because they want to believe that I'm this super sickly person. Needless to say, it makes you even MORE hormonal. *grin* You might copy off a packet of information from some of the lists or PCOS information pages to give to "new" doctors who doubt you (after all....we're only MERE patients....and WOMEN at that......*rolling eyes*). The thing to keep in mind is that even your GYN's and some Endocrinologists aren't all that up to date on the latest ways to treat PCOS. Many of the better treatments have only been discovered the past 5 to 7 years. With all the other medical information and conditions that are advancing, it's impossible for anyone to stay completely caught up and still have time to treat patients. WE are our best defense. WE have to take responsibility to do the research.....however, it's aggravating to have doctors look down their noses at us because WE know more about our condition and treatments than "they" do.....(we won't even talk about having to PAY for this scorn! ARGH!) I'm hoping that by sites like this.....with women all over the world sharing information and learning from each other, that doctors and medical providers will find that we DO have some good information. I think with the internet connections we have these days, we are in a much better position to finding the help we need and the information we require than our mothers before us. Keep your chin up......and don't be afraid to vent here. WE certainly understand....and there are very few who haven't been discouraged, upset, and plain ol' ticked off over the whole situation. Hugs, Shelley How many of you are taking Glucophage XR and have to CONVICE people that you are not diabetic and that you are taking it for PCOS?? I Have had to explain this several times and even had one dr call my gyn to have it explained to him hasnt it been proven that Glucophage helped PCOS? Why are not more drs informed of this? Just wondering if any of you had to do this explaining??
