Painful Periods-Whats the point in a period?

I have a question. If a woman doesn't ovulate, whats the point in having a period? I thought periods shed the tissue in the uteris for a baby? My periods are regular, but I was diagnosed with PCO. The Dr says I don't ovulate. My cramps from my period are very painful, feels like someone is taking steak knives and ripping my insides out. I take about 1000mg of Naproxen Sodium tablets for pain, but it doesn't seem to work. I am in pain for 3 days, very heavy flow, stop for a day and start back again on the 5th day, stop on the 6th. PLEASE HELP
