Re: Glucophage and kidney problems?From: Sue (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 2 Oct 2001 10:20:12 -0500 (CDT)
>I've read that lactic acidosis is a serious side-effect, and this is a particularly high risk for individuals with kidney disease. I have had frequent UTIs in the past and kidney stones a couple of times. Is the Glucophage something I should be worried about?< This is really an issue for a nephrologist or urologist (whoever's been treating your stones). If your stones are calcium in composition/nature (most re), then going on metformin (glucophage) shouldn't be too much of a concern. If you have a problem with your parathyroid gland and that's causing your stones, then the drs should really make a decision. I've had one stone, and since it was a calcium-built stone (had the stone while on metformin), there were no concerns. Just be sure to talk to all your drs and have them communicate between themselves. Lactic Acidosis is VERY RARE, and is usually contraindicated for the very old, very weak or ill. There are lots of posts about LA on this site--take some time and peruse the archives. I've had LA and survived it and have written quite a bit about the misconceptions and fears of the condition.
