Dear SamFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netMon, 1 Oct 2001 16:19:51 EDT
Dear Sam OB/GYN,RE I hope it's okay for me to address you personally. I've noticed your name on this board before and hope you can answer some questions for me about glucophage. I''m 37, ive had pcos for as long as I can remember and was diagnosed at 18, put on bc and spiro for 13 years, had three children, my third is 1 year old. I'm now looking into being treated again. My fasting insulin has recently checked by two different doctors are as follows. Visit A: 4/6/01 Fasting insulin was 18.1 norms(0-22.7) On this visit the doctor said I should go on glucophage. Visit B: 9/12/01 Fasting insulin was 8 norms (6.0-27.0) On this visit by a different doctor, he said glucophage is not proven to do much better than diet so he didn't recommend I go on it. * in between these two visits I been following a fairly low carb diet, not as low as atkins. My questions to you, if you will be so kind as to respond ,are as follows: If I have severe cosmetic syptoms from pcos and I do, will going on the glucophage help with this? Is there any info on how glucophage helps with insulin resistance long term, meaning life long? Do the insulin sensitization wear off over time, leaving one back to square one. I ask this because Ive heard of people doing well on glucophage for a while and then the doctors put them on and additional sensitizer because progress slows down or stops. I know you have said that bc only makes the insulin resistance worse so I don't want to do that to help with the hair issues, but is there anything else that will help the hair stuff and not create more problems with the IR? Im going to see yet another doctor on thursday Oct. 4th and I want to know what I should be looking for as far as if he's giving me the best help and advice. My syptoms have suddenly become much worse in the past few months and Im feeling very sad and scared. My hair is nearly gone and what is there has changed to mere wisps of delicate thread. My facial hair was not too bad before but I've noticed that is picking up the pace now as well. I've had two periods since August 11th I'm sorry to give you all this random info. I hope I havent troubled you with all this. Thank you. Sandra
