You're right, anyone who has doubts about their dosage should double-check with her doctor. However, doctors are not always right. Sometimes they don't know what they are doing, and don't admit to it, or are behind on information they should have before writing a prescription.

It's obviously a personal decision, but one that should be made with as much information as possible. Sometimes it helps to have a second (and even third) opinion. I know there is a specific study out there that showed that 1500 mg. is the minimum required for PCOS, but I cannot locate it at this time.

Check out these links: http://uc.edu/~gartsips/polycyst.htm#treatment

http://www.advancedfertility.com/metformin.htm

You will notice that they all mention a minimum of 1500 mg.
