Re: more about prednisone

just found this forum... I have pcod and rather severe asthma... i know abt prednisone (steroid) bc of my asthma (it is a common short-term treatment), and it is a dangerous drug to take, especially long term.. it causes all sorts of side effects, including bone loss. I would personally not want to take prednisone unless the condition being treated was life-threatening. I take inhaled cortasteroids for asthma now, and they are bad enough for side effects. Bf being diagnosed for pcod, I suspected the steriods of causing my weight gain and irregular bleeding, hair growth, etc. All my problmes began abt 6 months after starting to take large quantities of cortasteroids. But i am told it is all bc of pcod.

Anyway, with my pcod I have experienced weight gain (abt 20 lbs a year for 5 years), extreme dificulty reducing weight, periods that either are very far apart, or am constantly bleeding heavily (my longest period being abt 7 weeks), plus some hair growth on my chin (but i dont really care abt that).

My doc wants me to take the pill... i think "allesse" or some such... but my question is, well rather i am confused, bc sideefects of this pill are increased risk of stroke, heart disease, which are also risk factors for my current condition of pcod. So, why take the pill and increase already increased risk? (does this make part any sense, sorry if it does not.) I am thinking just to get the periods in order. I wish there were more effective treatments for pcod. The weight gain for me is the worst part.

>>> I asked her about the prednisone on my last appt as I understand
>>> some women take that who have PCOS and it helps with symptoms.
>>> She was startled by the request and seemed to think it was a
>>> very very dangerous idea.
