Re: Doing well on Glucophage, now symptoms coming back!!!From: Zowie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 31 Aug 2001 19:06:28 -0500 (CDT)
I'm sorry to tell you this Leanne, but PCOS will always present it's symptoms, especially if you're not taking all medications available for the symptoms. The Glucophage is your insulin sensitizer. It's function is to help your insulin work correctly, as well as help you to ovulate. Just because you're on this drug, and exercising and adjusting your diet does not mean that you will lose weight or see a decrease in your symptoms. :( PCOS is an Endocrine disorder, and our hormones are all out of whack. It's this and the insulin resistance that is causing the PCOS and it's symptoms. Believe me, MANY of us are struggling with our weight and despite the dieting and exercising, nothing is working. It's not OUR fault (or yours in this case)---that's just how our bodies are because of the IR and hormones. However, for symptoms such as acne and hirsutism, you can take something to combat the excess androgen. Some people are on Spironolactone (Aldactone), which is actually a diuretic with anti-androgen properties. There are also BCPs with this quality. I'm currently taking Flutamide, which is usually given to male patients with prostate cancer. So there are options out there. Read through the many archived posts and you will see how much information you can learn about the medications available and being used for PCOS. The same topics keep posting over and over---so I'm sure you'll find PLENTY of information. You just have to look. ;) Good luck!--Zowie :)
