Take Rogaine--the inital compound was used in cardiac patients and had the unexpected benefit of hair growth. Which, of course, the drug company glommed on to and marketed. And spironolactone is the same way--it is a blood pressure medication that has the side effect of slowly containing high levels of testosterone, thus stemming unwanted hair growth and hair loss. Your other points about met and weight loss are right--and drs should not "market it" to pts as a weight loss medication.
