Re: No weight loss on Glucophage!From: Zowie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 30 Aug 2001 11:36:16 -0500 (CDT)
I think you two are under the wrong impression about Glucophage (Metformin). For starters, it's not a weight loss drug. It's strictly an insulin sensitizer to help our insulin resistance. It's function is to help our insulin to work correctly. Because of this, SOME people experience weight loss, but that is only a side effect. All drugs have side effects, but not EVERYONE taking them experiences them all. I wish people would understand that Glucophage is NOT prescribed for weight loss. Just because a drug has a beneficial SIDE EFFECT does not mean it is prescribed for that side effect. That's totally ridiculous if you think about it. I wish Dr's would stop telling their patients that they are prescribing Glucophage for weight loss. It sends an incorrect message to the patients and makes them get their hopes up when in fact, weight loss is only a side effect and will NOT occur in all patients who take this drug. Bottom line, you should continue taking your Glucophage as it's for your insulin sensitivity. As for weight loss, believe me, I'm still trying to find help in that myself.
