Re: Glocophage and pregnancyFrom: Dona (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 21 Aug 2001 17:56:11 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Erin,Congratulations!!! Did your OB mention anything about taking extra folic acid? The worry about continuing on met is the risk of nueral tube defects (folic acid can help prevent this). You can read more about this in the archives.I am suprised that your OB is fighting you so much after your recent loss.Did he at least refer you to a perinatologist(High risk pregnancy doctor)? It might be wise to ask for a referal to one since most PCOS pregnancies can be considered high risk do to insulin resisitance (which sometimes manifests into pregnancy diabetes) and high misscarriage rates. I would discuss this with the OB you are seeing or your new one.The perinatologist will also do genetic counseling with you and your significant other and go over the risks of taking metformin while pregnant.Sometimes they will change you to an insulin pump which is considered safer than metformin.I know this is a lot to think about. I do hope you have a good pregnacy and find the right Doctor!Take care,Dona
