I do not follow low carb plans, as they can damage the kidneys and cause kidney stones. Since I've already had a stone and really don't want another, I've been advised to avoid low-carb plans. There are many conflicting views with this, but suffice it to say that I've literally tried every diet out there, and that includes low-carb plans.

I follow a style of eating described in "The Weigh Down Diet" by Gwen Shamblin. It's extremely balanced and sensible--you can eat what you want, provided you are physically (not just emotionally) hungry, and as long as you only eat until you are "politely full." It teaches you how to listen to your body and its cravings--teaching you that cravings are normally the function of your body trying to get a nutrient that you've not been giving it. So "dropping" certain foods (unless you are allergic to it) isn't recommended. I've had good success with this plan (and an insulin sensitizer)--losing close to 80#. It has received my RE's blessing and is sensible enough to continue through my pgy and get my OB's go-ahead as well. Email me privately if you want more details. The nice thing is that the plan puts food in its place--not causing me to constantly think about what I can and can't eat, and the weight has not come back.

Good luck!
