Re: Need Info on MetmorfinFrom: Zowie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 14 Jul 2001 17:16:49 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Julie, Metformin is an insulin sensitizer, Rx to help your insulin function correctly. Just because you have PCOS does NOT mean you are automatically insuin resistant. You need blood work done (a glucose tolerance test, insulin check, etc.) to first determine if you are IR or not. Then you and your Dr. should talk about WHICH insulin sensitizers you should be on. Met is only one. There is also Actos and Avandia. Metformin will make you have more ovulatory cycles, so if you are looking to become pregnant, this may help, but you just shouldn't assume that Met is "THE treatment" for PCOS. It also is the most common insulin sensitizer to have the worst side effects, such as nausea, diarrhea, headaches, etc. Not all who take it experience the side effects, but I believe the % rate was 55% for the occurence of these side effects. (Check http://www.rxlist.com) You need to talk to your Dr. first. This is why we all stress that an Endocrinologist is the best Dr. to see because PCOS is an endocrine disorder. Perhaps you should try to get a referral to one and then discuss this issue. After all, it's the field they specialize in. Hope this helps.
