Headaches, coughing, itchy skin on metformin/glucophage? (long)

For about six years I've taken Ortho-cyclen and aldactone for PCOS symptoms, and about a month ago I was formally diagnosed by a new Dr. This new Dr. started me on Metformin - 3x/day, the minimum dose. About a week later I started to notice a severe dry, hacking cough that didn't go away for about 2 weeks. Then, about 2 wks after starting met I started to get a dull headache that would come on once I got to work and last until I fell asleep. It did not respond to Advil. I was also taking Zyrtec for seasonal allergies, so I don't think this was related to seasonal allergies. I'm pretty sure they are sinus headaches though. I'm also on Flovent for an asthma-type condition and Nasonex for constant nasal stuffiness. To top it all off, about 3 days ago I started to notice severe generalized itching (my whole body itches).

Because all these things happened within a few weeks of each other and I've made no significant changes in lifestyle other than going off the Zyrtec about a week ago (and the metformin one day ago), I thought it might be an allergic reaction or side effect from the metformin. Has anyone else had any kind of similar symptoms? After looking around on the internet I've found that these are symptoms of hyperglycemia (among other things), but I've never been diabetic and I don't think I'm actually IR. I AM overweight. Does anyone have any ideas? Are all these symptoms just coincidental? I asked the Dr. and she said it wasn't side effects from metformin, and that I should be evaluated separately for these symptoms. Also, the symptoms have not subsided in the 40 hours or so I've been off the met. I'm giving it 3 days...

Thanks for any help or advice.
