Prednisone/Prednisolone has some very serious long-term side-effects, including bone thinning, osteoporosis, bone necrosis, diabetes, cataracts, weight gain, Cushing's disease. I have been on prednisone for ten years, and basically, I am now fighting for my life because of the side-effects. I have a chronic lung disease, and without it I would be dead, but I also now have osteoporosis, cataracts, my skin is very thin, and I have Cushing's Disease. I have also gained 125 pounds from ten years of steroid therapy. I am only 25. The other problem with long-term steroid use is that it suppresses your OWN natural cortisol production, so that now, after ten years, I am "steroid-dependent" and it makes getting off steroids even more dangerous and difficult. If you take steroids more than one month, you need to wear a Medic-Alert bracelet so that if you were in an accident or other emergency, you could get some replacement steroids since you dont' make your own cortisol. I would also question why it would be used for PCOS...when I saw my RE at U of chicago, he said he coudln't make a definitive diagnosis of PCOS b/c so many of the symptoms could be caused by the steroids....like the acne, weight gain, hirsutism is ALL caused by the steroids (and possibly the PCOS in my case). So...I hope this helps. Steroids are a very potent and dangerous drug.
