Re: Yet another question about insulin sensitizers - Dr. Sam

Metformin and Avandia DO lower blood sugar, that's why they're so commonly prescribed to diabetics (in connection with the fact that they are insulin sensitizers). All of us on this board have talked about this several times. Met and Avandia work DIFFERENTLY, and yes, they are "safe", but every pill or medication out there is going to have side effects. I AM hypoglycemic (and anemic) to begin with, so when I take my Avandia, I have to eat with it, to keep my blood sugar levels stabilized. The good thing is that the pills aren't supposed to make you "bottom out" on blood sugar (but it might if you are already hypoglycemic to begin with). Metformin is the worst when it comes to possible side effects, that's why I'm now on Avandia. I think you should talk to your prescribing Dr. to find out more about these medications you are on. The Met may not be the right one for you. For more info on these and other meds, try http://www.rxlist.com. But again, EVERY possible medication out there IS going to have possible side effects. Everyone is different, so we all tolerate them differently. --Zowie
