Re: Glucophage XR and alcohol don't mix!!From: Melinda (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 25 Jun 2001 08:51:27 -0700 (PDT)
You should be careful *any* time you drink alcohol while on *any* medications. I don't know if there are specific contraindications with Glucophage, but think of it this way: the chemical reaction of sugar is that it is converted into alcohol. Starch --> Sugar --> Alcohol. I'm not saying sugar will make you drunk, I'm saying that alcoholic drinks are already at the last stage of that process, which is why diabetics should not drink alcohol at all. I'm sure that drinking alcohol is going to play hell with your glucose/insulin whether or not you're taking Glucophage. I'm not taking Glucophage, and I'm not diabetic, but I almost never drink alcohol because even a small amount just puts me right to sleep, pretty much the same effect I get if I eat potatoes or pasta. To your body, it's all the same stuff, basically, just at different stages of the process, thereby giving your body more work to do or less work to do. --Mel Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo!
