Re: Question about blood clots

Christa~

Blood clots seem to frequently form in the veins of your pelvic area and legs (deep vein thrombosis/DVT).  For me, it was an awful cramp in my calf that lasted for a couple days and then lessened to a dull ache.  Pain in the calf is a HUGE indicator of a blood clot.  Apparently, people, even those with no history of blood clots, should NEVER massage their legs.  If there is a blood clot there, you run the risk of breaking it lose (it can travel to your lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism--very dangerous).  Other symptoms of DVT include swelling of the leg, redness of the skin of the leg, etc.  If you have these symptoms, call the doctor RIGHT AWAY!  I ignored my leg pain and it could have killed me.  Also, clots can form in the arteries.  If you have symptoms like tingling or numbness in your arms or face, slurred speech, weakness on one side of your body, etc., it could be indicative of a stroke or trans-ischemic attack (mini stroke) caused by a blood clot in the brain.  Once again, call the doctor right away.  I'm sorry to be such a nut about the blood clot thing.  I was just amazed that such a serious life-threatening thing happened to me and I just completely missed all the warning signs.  Every woman on BCPs should be aware of these symptoms (really, all women should be aware, since we get blood clots more often than men--lucky us!).  Knowledge is power.

Much love
