Re: Metformin and Birth Control?From: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 19 Jun 2001 09:36:52 -0400
Melinda~ Lexington is a wonderful city. I did my undergrad at UK. Anyway, I was on BCPs for a year (orthotricyclen) and then had deep vein thrombosis in my leg (blood clots) which then migrated to my lungs and caused a pulmonary embolism (VERY dangerous). The BCPs were the only meds I was taking at the time. I think smoking can increase the risk of blood clots even more when you're on the pill, although I have never ever smoked. A diet high in vitamin K is also bad (causes blood clots), and I think mine was since I'm a vegetarian and I ate a lot of salad and soy (Boca burgers!). I really think that not enough women are aware of the potential risk for blood clots while they're taking the pill and the things they can do to lessen this risk (when sitting at work or school or home, get up and walk around for a few minutes at least every hour...before taking a long car or plane trip, pop an aspirin to thin the blood...avoid wearing knee high socks or stockings as they cut off circulation to the lower legs...avoid crossing your legs a lot or sitting 'indian-style'). I don't know if there is a link between PCOS and blood clots, beyond the fact that obesity is a common occurrence among both populations (a symptom of PCOS and a cause of blood clots). Much love
