Let me, then, clarify what I suppose I meant. It has only been relatively recently that any serious studies or breakthroughs have been seen. In my personal experience, and in the experiences of many many women I have spoken to and read about, as recently as 10 years ago, PCOS was frequently diagnosed when the doctor noticed a fat woman with a hairy face, and that was it. I was told, as were many others, that PCOS is just a disease that fat women get, it's caused by being fat, and there is nothing to do but just live with it.

As recently as last year, many women had to beg and plead to convince their doctors to allow them to try Metformin -- or even to do any blood work. It took me 7 years to convince a doctor (after trying with several) to even give me a workup for PCOS, because "there's nothing you can do about it, so why bother?")

So, maybe there is a difference between what is generally known in the academics of the medical community, and what is actually put into practice by the medical community.

Oh, I have it, trust me.

Look, I am honestly not trying to start an argument, but lots of MDs claim to be well-informed on PCOS. Dr. Glueck will tell you he is one of the foremost authorities on PCOS, yet he misdiagnosed me.

Understand my point of view: After you told me that my current treatment was not only wrong but harmful, I tried to ask what you would suggest for a patient who could not take Metformin. I wrote at least 3 e-mails describing my reaction to Metformin (which did not include the usual GI-type side-effects). Now, I realize you are not my doctor and you are not treating me -- I merely asked for your opinion. I realize you're probably a busy person, and I don't think you owe me or anything. But I felt that if you were so quick to tell me that what I was doing was wrong, you could at least respond when I asked for an opinion, even if that response was "Gee, I don't know."
