Re: A Question for those who take METFORMIN

Samantha,

I've just started taking Metformin again to treat my insulin resistance. A year ago, my Endocrinologist put me on it, starting with 1 pill a day (500mg), then gradually moving me up to two and then three pills per day. This gradual ramp up is to allow your body to adjust so the side affects aren't so bad. I did have some side affects (gas, diarrhea) each time the dosage was upped, but it was bearable and would pass after a few days when my body adjusted. I think that 1500 mg per day is the typical dosage - at least that's what I've observed on this discussion board.

I stayed at this dosage for three months and, while it did regulate my periods, I didn't get the benefit of any positive side effects - no weight loss (in spite of a controlled diet) and no reduction of facial hair growth (can't comment on the acne since that's not a problem for me.)

Then my E tried to push the dosage to 2000 mg. The side effects got very bad and made me feel sick all the time. I should have just gone back to the 1500 mg per day, but instead, I stopped taking it altogether.

Now I'm back on it, starting slowly again. I can't just not treat my PCOS and hope it goes away. While I've heard some people report great things re: weight loss, hair reduction, acne reduction, I will be taking it only to maintain my health.

I hope that's helpful

-Debbie
