Metformin vs. Actos/Avandia ? Dr. Sam, please helpFrom: Michele (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 2 Jun 2001 11:17:50 -0500 (CDT)
After two years of knowing that I have PCOS, I have finally found doctors to confirm it and prescribe medication that will help. My question is this: Why would Metformin be prescribed instead of Actos or Avandia? My gyn keeps insisting that only Metformin should be used for insulin resistance related to PCOS and that the others are inappropriate because I'm "not diabetic". My primary care doc says that actos or avandia would be the way to go because the way in which they work differently from met would preserve my pancreas which will only last me until I'm 40 (I'm 26 now) if I continue with no meds or use metformin. She also mentioned that I should be careful on the avandia because it may make me ovulate (as if that would be a problem!). There is also the concern that I'm on a cocktail of medications for my asthma/allergies (claritin, liquibid, flovent singulair, albuterol), and what interactions they might have with insulin senstizing agents, especially metformin. Both doctors have decided that I need to go see an endocrinologist and perhaps a reproductive endocrinologist, but the regular first because it'll only take 30 days to get an appointment as opposed to six months! I want to be prepared with information when I go to my appointments with them, especially because my two regular docs seem to be riding opposite sides of the fence. Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer me, Michele D.
