Birth control pills...some getting confused by my postsFrom: AdoptASAP (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 29 May 2001 12:13:26 -0500 (CDT)
My posts were not directed at Insulin Resistant problems. While that is the number one concern, if you are thinking about BCP, my conern has been taking a drug that isn't helping you. The same thing the BCP (besides preventing pregnancy), Provera - a 10 day pill - does the same thing. Its less meds in your body. BCP are a CONSTANT medication in your body that is usually perscribed to PCOSers to give them a menstraul and a break from the hormones. Provera does that. Do you want a 30 day medication in your body that a 10 day pill can do? The hormones and menstraul screw ups are just a side effect to PCOS. Therefore, it isnt really helping the cause like Gluc/Met does. This is most important. Attacking the cause not the side effects. BCPs are only a bandaid. When you get off the BCP most likely the symptoms have worsened. Why? Not because of the medication itself, but because it was only hiding the PCOS and not treating it. PCOS needs to be treated in order to stop getting worse or to get better. PCOS gets worse with age. People have lost weight on BCPs alone only to gain it back when they get off the pill. People have gotten their acne cleared up, only to get it back when they get off the pill. The pill is a temporary solution for a bigger problem. I personally dont want meds 24/7 in my body that arent really helping anything. Thats only going to reek havoc on my body in the end. There are other methods of BC if you do not want to concieve. I will say it again, spermacide and condoms or sponge/diaphram are the same %age as a BCP in effectiveness. A Diaphram can be inserted up to 8 hours before intercourse. Spermacide can be applied during foreplay. The benefit is, this is temporary unlike BCP. Please rethink the whole BCP issue before really plunging in. BCPs are ONLY a bandaid. Provera will give you the temporary relief you need without the added insult.
