Dr Sam: spotting on the Pill, & spironalactoneFrom: jodi (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 3 May 2001 15:00:06 -0500 (CDT)
Dr Sam: Mircette is "desogestrel/ethinyl estradiol and ethinyl estradiol" according to the package. i am confused about that, because that seems as if there are two different types of pills in there, but they all look the same (except that two of the dummie pills are green and the other five are yellow...) My doctor, oddly enough, hasn't ordered any additional hormmonal levels to be checked out aside from 17-hydroxyprogesterone, since my level of that was sky high before. it was 635 or so, with 500 being my labs upper limit of normal in the luteal phase, which i was in when it was drawn. it is now down to 151, but since i have stopped cycling again, i have no idea which reference range to compare it to. (well, my other levels were high as well, tesosterone and LH to FSH and all... but the 17-hydroxyprogesterone i think she especiaally wanted to keep track of to rule out adrenal problems. if that was still high, she would have ordered one of those suppression tests... i won't even attempt to spell out what that's called!! i think its shortened to dex-test, though.) my doc did not suggest inducing a bleed before going on the pill, which i did think ws kind of weird but since she is one of the best docs in my city for PCOS, i figured she knew if that was ok or not. she said that since it had been so long since my last period (1 month and 20 days at that point) that even if i were about to have a period, i probably hadn't ovulated during that cycle anyway so i as ok to just start the pill. i kind of would have preferred to wait, but she wanted me on the pill for a month before i started the spironalactone (i just call it aldaactone because that is easier to spell...) so that we would know which pill was causing me side effects if i had any. i wanted to get started with getting that month over with so i could get started on the aldactone sooner, since that is what i really want to take to control the hair. so... now i am on a birth control pill which is making me bleed, and the only reason i went on the pill in the first place is so the aldactone wouldn't make me bleed! i have decided i want to quit taking the pill. i just don't like not knowing what is going on with my body, and this spotting isn't making me any happier about the pill. i have not decided if i want to try the aldactone alone and see what happens, or just stick with the metformin and see if, eventually, that controls the hair. maybe i should get my doctor to order some more hormonal blood work, so i can see if the metformin has been doing anything to give me hope. i really don't know why she didn't order anyting other than a chem panel and 17-hydroxyprogesterone... so, i think i will do that. but, i would still like to know, have you known of women who used spironalactone and had bleeding from it, but eventually stopped bleeding? i only stayed on it for about 3 weeks last time. i think i might give it a mmonth or two this time to see if the bleeding stops on its own, if i decide to go back on it. (ideally, i would like to wait fo the met to take care of the hair, but summer time is making me especially conscious of this problem and especially eager to deal with it ...) - jodi
