Re: Treating PCOS with BCPFrom: Zowie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 1 May 2001 09:42:55 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Susan, "Treating PCOS with BCP"--lol, that's an oxy moron. BCPs are NOT a treatment for PCOS. They can, however, keep your periods in a cycle (but they will NOT make you ovulate). You don't necessarily ovulate when you have your period. (You already know that) They are not treating ANYTHING when it comes to PCOS, but they ARE so frequently Rx for PCOS that it's ridiculous. For me, the BCP was the ONLY thing that got my periods "cycleized"; without them, I'd be bleeding continuously (and been there done that for a whole YEAR before being put on the BCP). If you do have PCOS, you'll need blood work to determine your hormone levels, glucose levels and have your insulin checked (to check for IR). Those test results will tell you what you need treatment for. If you are IR, Metformin, Actos or Avandia are insulin sensitizers to help your insulin to work correctly. If you are trying to attack any hirsutism/acne, an anti-androgen (Aldactone/Spironolactone or Flutamide) will help. First you need the blood test results to see where you are with your PCOS and go from there. Just a note, the LAST BCP you should be using is Ortho Tricyclen!! Because we need a steady, constant level of the estrogen in our bodies (due to the IMbalance of hormones), this BCP is terrible as it has 3 levels of estrogen in it. It will just make your hormones yo-yo even more. Not good!
