Hi CityKid, Yes, BCPs DO mask the symptoms of PCOS--they don't really HELP at all. Sounds like your Dr's don't really KNOW anything about PCOS. The LEAST they could do is check your hormone levels--but it is wise to have your glucose and insulin checked as well. You may NOT be IR (not all of us are), but you should still have this blood work done to deterine if you are or not. If all they want to Rx you is the BCP--they're dismissing you. You need a Dr who is knowledgeable about PCOS -AND- it's treatments. You can call the Dr's in your area and ask the secretary if the Dr there is familiar with PCOS--that will give you a better idea if you want to visit with that office or not. (Rather than going from one office to another and paying for visit after visit to find the right Dr.) The only good thing the pill will do for you is to help regulate your periods. Other than that, there are some that may help with the androgen problems (hirsutism/acne)--but they don't always work. If you are IR, you'll need an insulin sensitizer such as Metformin, Actos or Avandia, and if you are concerned about acne/hirsutism, and anti-androgen (Spironolactone or Flutamide for ex.) are what you need. Please try to find a more educated Dr in your area to seek the care you need.
