Re: For Dr. Sam about GlucocortoidsFrom: Zowie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 30 Apr 2001 13:05:08 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Christa, I'm (obviously) not Dr. Sam, but I wanted to point out that NO BCP is for IR. Where did you hear this?? The Glucophage IS, and that is also causing you to have more ovulatory cycles as well. Also, you should NEVER be on Ortho Tricyclen with having PCOS. Because it is a tri-phasic BCP (3 levels or "phases" of estrogen), it does NOT work well with us because our hormones are so out of whack to begin with. We need a STEADY, constant flow of hormones to keep us in check. Back to the BCP (Diane 35) and Glucophage---from what I've read on this board (mostly thanks to Dr. Sam), there should be no "interaction" between the 2 medications--again, they're for different purposes. The Glucophage is for your IR to help your insulin work more correctly, whereas the Diane is a BCP, but may also help with some of the symptoms from the PCOS (like the hirsutism and acne). The 2 medications seem to be a common combination outside the US (as Diane is not available here). I'm sure Dr. Sam will respond, but I just wanted to give you some insight in the meantime. A good website to check is http://www.rxlist.com . Here you can see for yourself the drug interactions and side effects (and other info) on medications. I have found it to be VERY helpful myself.
