Re: Glucophage Side EffectsFrom: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 11 Apr 2001 15:04:48 -0500 (CDT)
Hello all... Mary is quite correct in saying that you should not just "jump in" to glucophage treatment. Starting with doses even as low as 500mg per day will usually cause nausea and diarrhea. Your doctor should *definitely* start you on a much lower dosage before moving you up to something as high as 850mg 3xs per day. I would also suggest that women who have PCOS seek out a doctor who is familiar with this syndrome. Studies are turning up all kinds of new treatments and the syndrome is becoming better understood every day, but if you've got a doctor who doesn't follow these changes you will find your treatment options very limited. It's sad to say, but women have to take control of their own medical care these days, and if you do not *demand* a treatment you know to be successfully used by thousands of women, you may not get the appropriate treatment at all. Also, I would suggest finding a compassionate female doctor, as many male doctors do not always sympathize as fully with the sometimes defeminizing aspects of PCOS. I know that I had a very hard time convincing doctors this was something that even needed treatment at all until I finally found a doctor very familiar with the condition who understood how hard it would be for a woman to deal with having hair on her face and chest and being quite overweight. Sorry for the rant... but we all need to become our own doctors sometimes. I wish you all the best of luck.
