Re: ConfusionFrom: Dona (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 11 Apr 2001 12:14:59 -0500 (CDT)
Hi, Yes I have heard of that patch but not as a treatment for PCOS. It is more commonly used for Manopause (sp)and sometimes for endometriosis to help the uterine lining. Did they check her hormone levels? Is she low on both estrogen and progesterone? If they had givin her progesterone only to start a period and she is low on estrogen her period won't start so sometimes they wil give a combintaion of the two as you described to start menses. As far as this being an effective treatment for facial I dont think it will work because it is excess androgens that cause that (too much testosterone)There are other drugs that can be used for that such as spiro which you have probably read about on here. You are correct the root problem for us PCOSer's is Insulin resistance that in some cases can turn into type 2 diabetes if not controlled by diet or starting an insulin sensitizer such as Actos or Metfomin aka glucophage. I know this can be soo confusing the best thing I did when I found out I have PCOS was buy a book by Dr. Samuel Thatcher called "PCOS the Hidden Epidemic" it has been a great resourse and answered many of my questions that my doctor left unanswered. It also gave me questions to ask my doctor that I would have not asked.I strongly recommend this book for you and your girlfriend to read. Hope I helped in some small way. Dona
