Hi Jen,

I am sorry that your doctor's informations are as scarce as that. Progesterone (P) was first used to block ovulation in rats around 1930 (Selye,J), it was also tried in humans, but the formulation had to be injected daily, which is not a practical way of contraception. The idea got a boost with the synthesis of progestins (synthetic relatives of P, Djerassi 1952) which were then administered to humans as oral contraceptives (Pincus, Rock 1956) and are being used until today by millions of women. So the idea should be familiar to a doctor, especially to a gynecologist. She can turn to me for further information as I presented my Ph.D. on the role of different synthetic steroids in ovulation (1987). Hope this clarifies the idea of P and contraception I am looking forward to the reflections of your gynecologist too.
