Hi again, Actually, PCOS is an endocrine disorder/disease which can cause insulin resistance. I have yet to hear about it causing high blood pressure. I have normal/low blood pressure and have never had that kind of problem, but I do have the IR. From what I learned in the beginning (and have had reiterated to me recently--thanks guys!) is that PCOS is the root cause of ALL of the problems that many of us face---weight (being #1 usually), the brown spots (acanthosis nigricans), acne, excess hair, ovary pain (cysts are not present in ALL cases, even though it's called PolyCYSTic ovary syndrome) and other hormone/chemical imbalances. That's the problem, the unbalances. Most PCOSers are giving Metformin/Glucophage to help with their IR and insulin sensitivity, but many find the side effects UNBEARABLE. I sure did. That's why there's Actos and Avandia (and Rezulin, similar to Avandia), similiar medications that work differently to do the same job. However, some find that they gain a small amount of weight with these 2, but the side effects are GREATLY decreased. I didn't have any weight adjustments with Met, but it made me so sick that I ended up in the ER. Hence, I'm going to talk to my Endo about Actos and Avandia next Friday on my 1st Endo appt. Then they're Spironolactone, which is an anti-androgen to block the high levels of testosterone that cause the acne and hair growth. This is where Vaniqa also fits it. It's a new cream that helps with the facial hair. Basically, that's as much as I know about the medications that are offered for PCOS, other than BCPs. The only thing that BCPs have done for me is to "regulate" me so I don't bleed every blessed day of my life. However, I still have the HEAVY bleeding and clotting and I have yet to have a "period" that is under 8 days. I'm thankful because at least it's not over 300 days like before. I hope this information, although long (I'm sorry!) has helped you out a little bit. PCOS is the root cause of the other problems that arise simply because it's all about chemicals and hormones and how they are severely imbalanced. Now, finding all the right Dr's who know and understand PCOS and how to treat it correctly and effectively is another story. I can't write the info on that one because I'm still searching..........
