Weight gain & AvandiaFrom: Anne-Marie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 21 Mar 2001 16:13:49 -0600 (CST)
Two years ago, my endocrinologist prescribed 800mg of Rezulin. It caused me to have regular periods, but I also gained 15 pounds. When I stopped taking the Rezulin because it was deemed unsafe by the FDA, I lost 15 pounds almost immediately. My endo. then put me on 2000mg of Glucophage which did nothinge except upset my stomach. Last September, my endocrinologist prescribed 4 mg of Avandia with 2000mg of Glucophage. I started to have regular cycles again, but I started to gain weight and had headaches almost every day. (I think I was hypoglycemic from all of the medicine.) Right now, I'm not taking anything. I had one period on my own in January, and I haven't had one since. I've been to several endocrinologists who have all confirmed that I have PCOS. Now, my endo. wants me to take 4 mg of Avandia every day. Is anyone currently taking Avandia? Any negative side effects? Any positive results? I'm only 24 years old. I'm not really overweight, but I'm not a stick. I'm 5'7" and 145 lbs. I want to have children, and I'm really worried. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about the fact that I have PCOS. Some days are beter than others. Right now, I'm feeling pretty down about the whole thing. Any advice or words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
