Dear Zowie,

I think I have answered your question regarding spironoplactone and weight loss: spironolactone is basically a diuretic, thus you may shed some kilos when start to take it. Actos/Avandia: although they are not available in this country yet, but they work the same way as metformin does: they are insulin sensitizers and may reduce your insulin levels and improve your carbohydrate metabolism. As they were introduced only lately, there is less experience with them than with metformin. They seem to cause less side-effects but do not reduce weight (actually some women do put on some). As metformin reduces androgen levels and hyperandrogeni symptoms (acne, hair growth, weight gain etc.) it is expected that the latest insulin sensitizers would do the same, but there is little experience as far as that. Hope this information helps Sam (Ob/Gyn, RE)
