Re: symptoms of pcosFrom: jodi (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 11 Mar 2001 14:22:30 -0600 (CST)
the skin tags are indicative of insulin resistance, even if your insulin levels are "normal." also, "normal" for insulin levels doesn't seem to mean much... my fasting insulin was 19, and myu lab gives normal as under 20... so i thought I was screwed in that department (i really wanted my doc to let me try met) but she said 19 was high anyway. i have read that for a woman in her early/mid 20's, 6 or lower is the goal. (see paula's article on the PCOS discussion board...) i have also read that the insulin/glucose ratio is what matters. if you have less than... 4.5, i think? glucose:insulin, it is indicative of insulin resistance... i forget the exacct number, though. it is mentioned in samuel thatcher's book. my glucose was 82, so i fit into the IR description that way. at any rate... the skin tags are a sign of IR. play that up for all its worth!!! see if you can get a doc to let you try insulin sensitizers. (you can use those with or without trying low/modified carb dieting...) i can't offer any advice on the usefulness of vitamins with PCOS, though...
