Actos or Avandia--what's the difference?From: Zowie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 9 Mar 2001 14:00:29 -0600 (CST)
Hi ladies, I've been reading through the posts and see that Actos and Avandia are given to many of us for ovulation purposes. I was previously on Metformin (which I thought was relatively the same as Actos and Avandia--but I was not aware that they can make you ovulate if you don't on your own) and have stopped taking it for 2 weeks (per my Dr. because the side effects were too horrible to bear--I landed in the ER because of it). My original understanding from the Dr. who Rx the Met is that this medication is to help improve my insulin sensitivity (I never had a problem with ovulation before, but I was put on Ortho Novum to keep me regular because I'll just keep bleeding without it). I have an RE appt. at the end of this month and need to ask them about Avandia or Actos---which would be better for me for my insulin problem. I don't need anything to make me ovulate (wouldn't that be a problem--giving me an ovulation med and keep me on the BCP???). I only need the medication for my insulin problem, and I've heard that Actos and Avandia are known to have LESS side effects than Met, but don't know what the differences are. I'm not looking to get pregnant any time soon and just want some basic info to help me with my questions to the RE. Any help is appareciated. Thanks!
