Re: maybe a dumb question about the Pill and PCOS

Hi Gem, Yes the pill will still work as birth control. Just because it's given for one issue, doesn't mean it won't work for it's PRIMARY issue. After all, it isn't called "birth control pill" for nothing. I, too, went through the same thing. I've had PCOS since I started having my periods and was only diagnosed about a year ago. They started me on the pill (a year before that) because I was bleeding CONSTANTLY and extemely HEAVY. The pill did help to regulate me (when they finally figured out which one I should be on), but the bleeding never really lessened in flow. They even agreed that I should go on it CONTINUOUSLY and not take the 1 week placebo since my periods were just too intense (I couldn't even work or get out of bed practically). So by taking the active pill continuously, I wouldn't have a period. As long as I remembered to STOP taking the pill for a week, 3 times a year to shed my uterine lining so I would have less a risk for ovarian cancer. (You should always have your period at least 3 times a year to stay 'healthy'). That worked for a few weeks---if you can say it even worked. I started spotting and here it came again--even though I was still taking the active pill. The first idiot Dr. I saw actually upped the strength of the pill to the highest form there is and told me to try those for 3 months. They just made things totally worse. When I saw a GYN specialist (who also Rx the Met for me in Jan.) she took me off the pill cold turkey and I haven't been put back on yet. That was Jan. 9th and I haven't had a period yet----I guess my body is getting use to the LACK of estrogen it's been getting fed for nearly 2 years. So, as you can see, it's guesswork when you talk abou the pill--but eventually they'll get it right. Sorry it's such a long answer to your question--but I wanted to explain that there is no "simple" answer when it comes to BCPs. You just have to keep trying with them. But yes, they will STILL be a birth control method for you. Hope this helps! Sorry it's so long!
