Hi Mike and girlfriend! *HUG*

You've, unfortunately, experienced the "traditional" way of treating PCOS. There are TONS of doctors who are CLUELESS!!! I have gone to endocrinologists who've told me they don't know anything about newer treatments and refuse to learn or read anything I bring in to them! A lot of us feel that even worse than the medical problems of PCOS itself is having to deal with an uncaring and clueless medical field! In other words.....YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!!

Hence the formation of support groups on the internet and in person.......by sharing information and frustrations and giving each other support to deal with everything, we hope to slowly change the way the medical profession views us. Most of us are MUCH more informed than our doctors. You're off to a great start.....monitor the posts here, read the archives, and do a little "research" whenever you can. There are also other PCOS support groups online who can give you more specific information for doctors in your particular area that are compassionate and knowledgable of PCOS. One I know of is http://www.pcosupport.org They have chapters in most states and several countries.

By banding together and forming a collective voice, we women are hoping to make an impression on the medical field that we are in need of help and DESERVE compassion. It's not "in our heads" or "just lose weight"....PCOS is a REAL medical problem. We've got a long way to go, but I think we're making some progress. I have read of several new discoveries during my 1 1/2 years of being part of an online support group. As we share our stories, we also begin to discover things that we never would have thought directly related to PCOS.....like cracked, dry heels.....the skin darkening around the neck.....flakey scalp.......hair loss on the head.......excess hair in unwanted places......mood swings.....depression......etc etc. I think the medical community, with a LOT of prodding on our part, will begin to notice that we're NOT a bunch of hypochondriacs, and that we're intelligent women who are finding links and answers on their own by sharing, and all we need is a few medical professionals to take a real look at what we've discovered ourselves......maybe then, we can whip this thing for good! Until then....the BEST thing you can do for your girlfriend is to be as understanding and compassionate as you can. PCOS is a medical problem just as a broken leg, diabetes, asthma, etc......although there may be some things we have done that could contribute to our condition, I really don't believe it's something we can control or avoid just be doing or not doing certain things.

Best wishes....sorry I didn't give you any true answers.

Hugs,

Shelley spryte@dnsonline.net
